The Mediterranean Diet
While the goal of most diets is to lose weight, it is also important to choose a weight loss plan that is healthy. One of the best ways for people who are interested in weight loss and improving their overall health to do so is to follow the Mediterranean diet. Based on the eating habits of people who live in Spain, Italy and Greece, this diet has been shown to help people stay fit and improve their heart health and reduce the risk of cancer.Following the Mediterranean diet is fairly simple. There are no calories or points to count, and the rules are fairly general. This diet focuses on eating whole foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Sweets are not forbidden, but they are limited as are red meats and foods with saturated fat. Dairy and eggs are also limited in this meal plan; most protein is derived from beans, nuts and fish.
The Mediterranean diet is not a low fat diet, though, but it is low in saturated fats. The main source of fats that people consume in this diet come from olive oil, preferably extra-virgin olive oil. Olive oil has monounsaturated fats, which promote heart health and keeps arteries clear. Many studies have shown that people who follow this diet have fewer incidences of heart disease and cancer, and much of that is attributed to eating foods that are filled with good fats.
Red wine is another reason that doctors believe people who follow this diet are healthier. While the diet does not encourage excessive drinking, consuming red wine in moderation can improve cardiovascular health. Red wine is also filled with antioxidants, which help get rid of free radicals, reducing the risk of cancer.Finally, losing weight on this diet plan requires an active lifestyle. The good news is this doesn’t require a rigorous daily workout session, but you will need to do a lot of walking. If you have a desk job, you will need to hit the treadmill.
Following the Mediterranean diet is not difficult because it does not require you to cut sugar or fat out of your diet, just saturated fats and added sugars. Additionally, there are no special exercise regimens you need to follow, simply staying active is sufficient. This diet is a great way to slim down and extend your lifespan.
